1st District Vice Commander

Area Vice Commander

The First District uses an area system for the election of and the assigning duties for District Vice Commanders. The ten counties of the District are divided into four (4) areas with two areas having three (3) counties and two areas having two (2) counties. The District Vice Commanders are elected at the annual District Convention and are from the areas that they will serve as a District Vice Commander.

AREA 1 --- Winona, Wabasha and Olmsted Counties

AREA 2 --- Steele, Dodge and Waseca Counties

AREA 3 --- Houston and Fillmore Counties

AREA 4 --- Freeborn and Mower Counties

It is the duty of the Vice Commander to represent the district in that area when the District Commander is not available and to coordinate activities and rallies of the Posts within that area. The Vice Commander is to work with the County Commanders on all areas of responsibility for and on programs of the American Legion. The Vice Commander serves as a member of the District Executive Committee during their term of office.

The Vice Commander should be aware of District programs and policies and provide guidance and leadership to the Post and County officers in their area. Vice Commander should make every effort to attend at least one Post meeting of each Post in their area. They should aid and assist the district chairman when requested in the promotion and dissemination of information on the program. They should be concerned and involved in the membership program as set up by the District and Department so that this vital area can be covered. It is the prime responsibility of the Vice Commander and the District Membership Director.

The Vice Commander should have a grasp of parliamentary procedure so that they may run meetings and assist the District Commander when called upon to do so. Each Vice Commander shall be responsible for Rally meetings held in their area.

Each Vice Commander should submit a column for their Monthly District Newsletter.

Each Vice Commander is a voting member of the District Executive Board.
